This blog will include my unkempt thoughts on science, politics, music, wombats and cats. Breaks will be allowed for attending to your real job, naps, thirst and fatigue. Greetings.

The Surge: A Great Idea

(I'm going to repost some things because this makes me too sick to write anything new)

like stretcher bearers
at Verdun
we watch
bright eyed new leaders
arrive in glory
and leave
promoted
to disgrace.

as each new commander
slams fist to palm
exclaiming
'we have the formula!'
we know to order
neighborhoods
of bandages,
forests
of coffins.

The people who could put a stop to this, who sought the positions of responsibility, are all guarding their flanks, against colleagues, constituents and rivals. It's fairly stupid; by their own accounting, they're highly capable individuals. Even if their career prospects were circumscribed by acting in the public good, there are plenty of other prospects.

At least Barbara Boxer, whatever else her faults, called out Iraq war supporters on this, that they themselves lose nothing and make no sacrifices in all this carnage they endorse.
